Matcha Lovers Rejoice: Must-Try Matcha Sweets in Jiyugaoka

— Editor’s Gourmet Report —
Calling all matcha lovers!
Our editor hit the streets of Tokyo to taste-test some of the best matcha sweets around — and we’re excited to introduce you to a spot that’s truly unforgettable.

What’s So Special About Jiyugaoka?

Located in Tokyo’s Meguro Ward, Jiyugaoka is a stylish neighborhood full of charm. From cozy cafés to trendy boutiques and artisan shops, it’s a favorite among everyone from fashion-forward youth to elegant madams.

And now, Jiyugaoka is home to a legendary name in Japanese cuisine...

A Taste of Tradition: Ginza Tatsutano Comes to Town

Established over 130 years ago, Ginza Tatsutano is a well-known name among Japanese foodies — especially famous for its savory kamameshi (traditional rice pot dishes).

In 2023, the historic restaurant opened its newest location right here in Jiyugaoka. While their savory dishes remain iconic, their sweets deserve just as much attention — particularly their matcha desserts, which have built a loyal fanbase over the years.

Since opening, fans from all over Japan have been flocking to this new location just to get a taste.

What We Tried:

Ujikintoki(宇治金時)
Matcha Parfait (抹茶パフェ)

Ujikintoki(宇治金時)-Matcha Shaved Ice

Imagine drinking a chilled cup of high-quality matcha — but in shaved ice form.
This dessert is packed with deep matcha flavor, complete with just the right touch of natural sweetness.

Even with its impressive size, it’s surprisingly light and easy to finish. Our editor was genuinely blown away, saying it was unlike any matcha shaved ice they’d ever had before.

Matcha Parfait (抹茶パフェ)

First things first — this parfait is absolutely gorgeous.
You can tell each layer has been thoughtfully crafted, not just for appearance but for balance of flavor.

The sweetness is subtle, allowing the high-quality ingredients to truly shine. From the creamy matcha to the silky mochi and lightly sweetened red bean paste, every bite is a harmony of texture and taste.

Even those who typically shy away from red bean may find themselves converted — it’s that well done!
